Items and Item Management inspired by Baldur's Gate

Items and Item Management inspired by Baldur's Gate

So here's a few things I'm going to share in this article:

  • Creating your own items.
  • Easier ways to manage inventory weight
  • And removing attunement

Alright, here goes nothin'.

First, Items....

Let's create an item

  • You should use this setup
Item Name:
Item Description:
Item Cost:

  • For example
Item Name: The Careless Whisper
Item Description:
Born from jealousy’s twisted ember, within the boughs of Arch Fey Fru’Zalaun’s sapwood home, lies a dagger etched with the agony of a lost love. Forged from raw emotion, it whispers promises of forbidden grace, yet bears a cruel curse: each graceful twirl it witnesses, forever shattered, its victim a prone statue yearning for steps they'll never again command.
Never Dance Again: On a Charisma save based on your spellcaster DC (Or 8 + Proficiency + Dexterity or Strength if you cannot cast spells). The target takes 3d8 Psychic damage. On a failed save, the target falls prone immediately for 1d4 turns or until the target get's help magically or physically. The 1d4 turns can stack, but the victim only needs help once to get out of this control.
Item Cost: 250gp

Notice how I didn't balance this item at all. I just made it up. You could try balancing your items. But we're also dealing with rules from the same place that just fired everyone responsible for Dungeons and Dungeons and dragons having the most successful few years in both tabletop and in the digital world.

What about restrictions like Attunement?

Ignore Attunement and replace it with:
  • Head pieces
  • Boots
  • Two to Ten ring slots (it's your game, you make the limits and logic)
  • A head decor item.
  • Cape
  • Armor
  • A spot for each hand.
  • A spot for each hand ranged.

Now... Inventory Management...

INFINITE POCKETS!

Why?

  • Inventory Management rarely comes up in most games and Baldur's Gate 3 gives you so many ways to get around being encumbered that you don't need the usual "Bag of Holding".
  • Use Magic items be a replacement for gold sometimes. Now they have to determine if it's worth keeping a utility item or getting enough money to buy something else. Maybe a better item. Or maybe they pay the DM 100 GP to respec.
  • If they want the gold for the products given, they can visit a shop. Or trade with each other.

Lastly... why not stick to regular Attunement, but you attune if you have it equipped.

What I mean is, only letting players have 3 magic items active at a time.
This goes in the opposite direction of having a ton of magic items. But it definately forces the player to pick better gear. And it makes things easier for the DM to consider how they want to create items.

Item I deal with this 3 items only setup.
Item Name: SSUC (Solo soy una chica)
Item Description:

In the Velvet Cage, where whispers hid fury and smiles hid blades, Lady Hellah Good -- a slave from Aizonia -- spun silk into steel. By day, she wove a tapestry of demure charms, lulling her jailers into complacency. By night, with needlepoint as sharp as wit and threads spun from moonlight, she crafted armor whispered from the rays of light that made it's way into her cold damp room. When dawn broke, so did her rebellion! Rumor of a legendary lady or the more common mythical Madame are still told today. Many desire the Madame. More desire her armor.
Forced hand hold When wearing the armor, you can cast "Detect Thoughts" once per day with no material components.

Let me be! When attacked with a melee weapon, as a reaction, you may lash back with a shield bash dealing 2d4 damage. This attack uses a Dexterity save  DC (8 + proficiency bonus + Strength or Dexterity or Charisma) and if the target fails, they are knocked prone.

Pink Ribbon. Immunity to blindness.

Item Cost: 250gp

There's a lot in one item, but it's got enough to cover a lot of interesting use cases.

There's a lot more you can do to change weapons up and maybe just use the ones you already have. Just remove attunement. And try to be liberal with potions and scrolls. Basically anything that be used only once.
